I have been reading ‘The Street Photographer’s Manual’ by David Gibson. I also have his 50 cards ‘The Street Photography Challenge’ which I think are brilliant, especially for a newcomer to street photography such as myself. They have been an inspiration.

I have decided to use this as a starting point for developing some projects. One of these projects is about using layers, (not in terms of foreground, mid ground and distance), but as a layer through which we might see. Gibson states ‘Taking photographs through things, such as glass or material, adds a natural artistic layer. Suddenly there is another meaning’.

I realise that this is a method I like to use and one of my other on-going projects on the Uber Boat reflects this too. The photos shown below represent the beginnings of this project.

The photo in the top left was shot in the street looking through cracked glass. The top right photo was taken in a restaurant looking through a water feature onto a yellow car in the street.

The middle left photo was taken on a train taken through a rainy window. The middle right is shot through a window with condensation.

There is a photo that is still confusing to me!! I was on a boat and I think the seats are a reflection in a window, but the expanse of water is through a window. It makes me feel as though I am under the water. The bottom right photo is a lady in red entering a restaurant taken through a decorated mirror with graffiti on it.

The photo of the young woman is a reflection taken through a red perspex ‘window’ at the Serpentine Gallery. It is part of the https://www.serpentinegalleries.org/whats-on/serpentine-pavilion-2024-by-minsuk-cho-mass-studies/
